Genome-wide DNA methylation predicts environmentally driven life history variation in a marine fish
This study of capelin examines the links between DNA methylation and spawning on beaches or in deeper water. Two geographic lineages show epigenetic variation associated with these strategies, with different strength. The work sheds light on the relations between environment, genetic and epigenetic variation.
- The question
- How are contrasting spawning strategies associated with methylation in two capelin lineages?
- The approach
- Comparison of genomes and methylomes of capelin from North America and Europe with contrasting spawning strategies.
- What the article brings
- Methylation differences are observed in both lineages, with a stronger effect in the European lineage.
- The limits
- The links between methylation and spawning strategy do not validate an age measure or an operational tool. The full text consulted is the preprint, earlier than the published article.
