Reduced fitness associated with introgression within the Western Mediterranean admixed population of European seabass
The Western Mediterranean sea bass population results from hybridisation between the Atlantic and Mediterranean lineages. In 1,488 admixed fish, more Atlantic ancestry goes with a more male-biased sex ratio, more sensitive to temperature, and a lower body weight.
- The question
- Does the Atlantic ancestry of admixed Western Mediterranean sea bass affect fitness-related traits?
- The approach
- 1,488 admixed sea bass genotyped with the Axiom Sea Bass 57k SNP DlabChip array, then each fish's admixture level related to traits measured under three thermal regimes (19, 21 and 23 °C).
- What the article brings
- More Atlantic ancestry goes with a male-biased sex ratio, more sensitive to temperature, and a lower body weight, which is correlated with fecundity in fish.
- The limits
- The authors conclude that Atlantic introgression is likely disadvantageous in the Mediterranean, consistent with the purging of Atlantic ancestry tracts observed earlier.
